יוזמה של ה-WPA לשיתוף פעולה איזורי בין איגודי הפסיכיאטריה

The Beirut meeting has already been held on December 9 and has been very productive indeed

Dear Colleagues and Friends

I would like to report on some very positive developments with reference to the difficult Middle East situation. After a series of negotiations, both the Lebanese Psychiatric Association and the Israeli Psychiatric Association have agreed to issue anti-war statements and have expressed their willingness to work along with others and in collaboration with the WPA towards friendly settlement of disputes. Additionally, the Palestinian Psychiatric Association has expressed its appreciation for the efforts of the International Psychiatric Community to contribute to the peaceful resolution of conflict in the area.

I am grateful to all three Associations for their productive collaboration and for having invited me to be the key-note speaker in special conferences in Beirut and Tel Aviv. The Beirut meeting has already been held on December 9 and has been very productive indeed. The Tel Aviv meeting will be held on January 12. Members of the Hellenic Psychiatric Association EC will actively participate.

We all know, of course, that our voice is not all that strong and influential. Wars will not stop because of our intervention alone. Yet, along with others we can have some influence and, in any case, it is our ethical obligation to highlight the important psychosocial consequences of war (and even threatened war) on the mental health of the population of the world.

Let us hope that the New Year will be peaceful.
With warm wishes for Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
